BEIJING FLICKERS: Review by Tom Vick

Writer and film programmer Tom Vick is a fan of Asian cinema, and Director Zhang Yuan in particular. Of Zhang, he writes, "Since 1993's Beijing Bastards, [he] has been a specialist in depicting both marginalized characters and extreme intensities of emotional conflict."

In his recent review of Zhang's Beijing Flickers, Vick said it was the rare modern film to portray the city as a character, a "living entity." He calls the film "stunning," and examines its role in the context of Asian romcoms and Chinese realist films.

Beijing Flickers will be playing at the Toronto International Film Festival.
